Crafting Excellence: Best Practices in Question Writing for Continuing Medical Education

Continuing Medical Education (CME) plays a pivotal role in keeping healthcare professionals updated with the latest developments in medicine. Central to the success of any accredited CE program is the quality of its assessments, and effective question writing is at the heart of creating assessments that truly evaluate knowledge and encourage continuous learning. In this blog post, we'll delve into best practices in question writing for CME to ensure assessments are not just evaluative but also educational.

Align Questions with Learning Objectives:

  • Ensure that each question aligns closely with the stated learning objectives of the accredited CE. This alignment ensures that assessments effectively measure the knowledge and skills the activity aims to impart.

Clarity and Simplicity:

  • Craft questions with clear and unambiguous language. Ambiguous questions can confuse learners and compromise the reliability of the assessment.

  • Avoid using language intended to trick or confuse learners. The goal is to assess knowledge and competence, not to create confusion. Clear and straightforward language ensures a fair assessment.

  • Ensure that each question has a single, correct answer.

Real-World Relevance:

  • Emphasize questions that reflect real-world scenarios. By grounding questions in practical situations, you encourage healthcare professionals to apply their knowledge to clinical practice.

  • Integrate case-based scenarios into assessments. These scenarios require healthcare professionals to analyze information, make decisions, and apply their knowledge in complex clinical situations, fostering critical thinking skills.

  • Case-based scenarios can lend to achieving Moore’s level 5 outcomes.

Feedback Mechanisms:

Provide detailed feedback for each question, explaining the correct answer and offering insights into incorrect choices. This not only aids in reinforcing correct information but also serves as a valuable learning tool. For some credit types, such as Maintenance of Certification (MOC), feedback and/or rationales may be required.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Treat question writing as an iterative process. Gather feedback from learners and assess the effectiveness of questions. Use this feedback to continually refine and improve the quality of future assessments.

  • Consider what the outcome of a particular question will convey. Is it important to your internal and/or external stakeholders that learners know or can apply the information? Will retaining the information assessed lead to improved patient care?

Effective question writing in accredited CE is an art that requires a deep understanding of educational principles and the unique needs of healthcare professionals. By adhering to these best practices, CME providers can ensure that assessments not only measure knowledge but also actively contribute to the ongoing learning journey of healthcare professionals. In doing so, we uphold the commitment to excellence in medical education and, ultimately, enhance patient care outcomes.
